CBD has been gaining in popularity recently, and it’s easy to see why. With the potential benefits it offers for pain relief, soothing anxiety, and alleviating insomnia, CBD is a welcome alternative for a culture that has often relied heavily on pharmaceuticals remedies. We get a lot of questions about CBD in our office, so here are some answers to common questions.

What is CBD, and where does it come from? Cannabidiol (CBD for short), is one of many cannabinoid compounds that occur naturally in the cannabis plant. You may be familiar with the other well-known cannabinoid, THC. THC is the substance responsible for the “high” that marijuana users get, and is a completely different compound than CBD. It is important to make the distinction that there are two types of cannabis plants, hemp and marijuana. Hemp plants contain less than 0.3% THC and are the source for CBD products. Taking or using CBD in any form will not get you high, as it does not come from marijuana plants.

How does CBD work in our bodies? All mammals have an endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is a signaling system that allows our cells and organs to communicate with each other in order to balance overall activity and energy consumption. It does this with substances called endocannabinoids (cannabinoids produced inside our bodies), which are neurotransmitters. But sometimes your body loses the ability to maintain a healthy endocannabinoid balance, which can be caused by dietary and lifestyle factors, or other disorders. Luckily, plant-based cannabinoids such as CBD can interact with our endocannabinoid system to promote balance and maintain a healthy endocannabinoid tone.

Is CBD legal? Purchasing CBD is federally legal. The Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018 (sometimes referred to as the Farm Bill) legalized CBD that is derived from hemp and contains no more than 0.3% THC. All reputable CBD companies have every batch of their products rigorously tested for potency and purity, and make the results available to their customers. Look for products that contain hemp grown and produced in the U.S.A.
